1 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), 5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob's well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well.

8 (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) 9 撒玛利亚妇人对他说, “你怎么, 一个犹太人, 向我要一杯饮料, 撒玛利亚的妇人?(因为犹太人与撒玛利亚人没有来往.) 10 耶稣回答她, “如果你知道上帝的恩赐, 是谁在对你说, “给我一杯饮料,你会这样问他, 他会给你活水.” 11 女人对他说, “先生, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. 你从哪弄到活水的? 12 难道你比我们的祖宗雅各还大吗? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” 13 耶稣对她说, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 女人对他说, “先生, 把水给我, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”

16 耶稣对她说, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 妇人回答说,我没有丈夫.” 耶稣对她说, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. I perceive that you are a prophet. 20 我们的祖先在这座山上做礼拜, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” 21 耶稣对她说, “女人, 相信我, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 但时辰快到了, 现在就在这里, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, 因为父要这样的人敬拜他. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 女人对他说, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ).

They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?或者“你为什么和她说话??” 28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, 29 “你们来看,有一个人把我所做的一切都告诉了我. 难道这就是基督吗?” 30 他们出了城,往耶稣那里去.

31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. 36 Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, 好使撒种的和收割的一同欢乐. 37 For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 我差你们去收你们所没有劳苦的. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”

39 Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony, “他把我所做的一切都告诉了我.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. 42 他们对女人说, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, 因为我们是亲耳听见的, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”

Her shame and circumstances push her to draw water in the middle of the day where she can avoid the other women. Then Jesus comes and breaks all the social rules of the day. As a man, he demonstrates no denigrating attitude toward a woman. 但最重要的是, 是上帝, 他不谴责这个罪人, who is condemned every day when she makes the lonely walk to the well. Instead, our Lord has a conversation forged from compassion, out of a desire to redeem and restore.

就像他赐给她永远解渴的水, her mind raced to the possibility of never having to make that walk to the well again. Maybe she thought about how this water just might remove one thing from her life that underlined her shame. She seems to be no longer burdened by shame and condemnation, as she points out to everyone who would hear her how Jesus told her of all that she had ever done. 代替羞耻和谴责, she is now compelled by a desire to invite everyone else, “你自己来看看吧.”

In the barren desert of sin and broken lives, our Lord quenches our thirst. “如果你知道上帝的恩赐, 我是谁, 你会要求喝一杯, 我也必将活水赐给你们.” This is the compassion, mercy, and grace of our Lord. With our deepest thirst quenched, we, too, are compelled to invite others who thirst. Because of her words, others came to see Jesus and then asked him stay.

Lord, forgive my sin and restore me in the joy of your salvation. Help me to be compelled by your compassion for those around me who need living water,
